Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a magical place where you never feel the need to hide who you are. Germany as a whole is so beautiful and rich with history. I cannot wait to return and spend more time in Berlin and to travel around to the other incredible cities. We spent such a short amount of our trip here but we made the absolute most of it! These are some of the most breathtaking and interesting things we did during our stay.
1. Abandoned Berlin
I was filled with adrenaline when I found out there are places around Berlin that have been adandoned for years but if you’ve got courage and some skills you can sneak in and explore. We chose Spreepark but unfortunately the guards were out that day, stomping around ready to catch any intruders. We circled Spreepark about 3 times, scanning the area for a way under the gate. My inner rebel was wounded when we discovered there was no way to get in. I snapped a couple photos and we were on our way. You can visit the website for abandoned Berlin by clicking that link! Let me know how your adventure goes!
2. Holocaust Memorial
This is a memorial for all of the people who lost their lives in the Holocaust. This is an absolute must do while in Berlin. It will leave you speechless. Just having the opportunity to pay your respect to these people is a beautiful, painful, and powerful thing.
3. East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery is meant to represent freedom. It is a collage of artwork that is painted on the longest standing segment of the Berlin wall. Take your time as you wander down the sidewalk to actually absorb the energy that this masterpiece brings. Take plenty of photos so you can look back on them and have them fresh in your memory time and time again.
4. Burgermeister
Burgermeister is the place I chose for your must visit lunch spot! You will not be disappointed, I can promise you that! For someone who personally does not eat beef I was surprised that I found something on the menu that appealed to me. It was a tofu burger smothered in the best sauce I’ve ever tasted and I still dream about it to this day. I LOVE this place and I love the fact that they have options for people who don’t eat beef. Please, do yourself a solid and eat here. Your taste buds will thank you.
5. Neptune Fountain
Neptune Fountain is conveniently located next to the well know TV Tower of Berlin. So, if you check out the gorgeous fountain you can look into taking a ride to the top of the tower as well! This fountain has an alluring sculpture of the Roman God Neptune in the center and it is said to be the most ravishing fountain in Berlin.
6. Kreuzberg
Kreuzberg is the neighborhood we chose to stay in because there were plenty of bars and restaurants in the area that were each about a ten minutes cab ride from us. One of the bars I recommend visiting is Clash. It provides a unique, punk/metal atmosphere and is a great place to grab a cold beer. There are also a collection of bars and places to eat along the side of the water that are absolutely stunning! Definitely a great place to grab a bite for dinner.
7. A.Horn Kaffee
This wonderful gift of a restaurant offers the most mouthwatering food you could imagine. I miss it so much I want to cry! They have fresh squeezed juice, FRESH bagels that are to die for and huge platters of the juiciest fruits, tender meat, and delicious granola and yogurt. I ordered so much food I wanted to burst but I was beyond happy! Michael pretty much had to roll me down the street afterwards.
8. Topography Of Terror
This a free indoor/outdoor museum that teaches you what it was like in Germany when Hitler rose to power. It is terrifying to read about the horrors those innocent people had to endure but it is important to educate yourself about it. The Topography of Terror provides plenty of information on this subject so I highly recommend visiting during your stay.
9. Try Club-Mate
This is a big hit in Berlin! It’s a soft drink with an insanely high caffeine content. I am so sensitive to caffeine I couldn’t even finish it BUT when in Berlin you try a Club-Mate! It’s great if you plan on partying because it’ll definitely give you the energy you need to dance all through the night!
Berlin is a diamond located in Western Europe and it is impossible not to have a good time there! I hope this short guide helps you during your trip and please comment on anything different that you may have done during your stay! Travel safe and thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for reading my post.
