Mykonos, Greece

It is extremely difficult to give one place that we traveled the title of being our favorite but out of all the countries we ventured through that left us awestruck, Mykonos was the only one where we actually made friends. Amongst the stunning buildings, all splashed in white and blue, and the transparent waves that crash against the shore with grace; there are the wonderful people to share this unforgettable experience with. I know I have talked about the locals in many other places but these people made us feel like family from day one. We dragged our exhausted feet into the first bar we saw after our plane ride had taken its toll on our bodies, minds, and moods. We slumped over in our seats as our eyes slowly danced around the room eventually meeting with the two beautiful people behind the bar. They struck up conversation with us and before we knew it our moods did a 180 and we were all laughing and taking shots together. From that night on we visited them nearly everyday and spent hours in that bar. We even had the pleasure of meeting the owner, a man with excellent dessert making skills and plenty of wild stories to keep a permanent grin on your face. If I could put into words how warm and happy this experience still makes us feel I would but it is not something meant to be described. You will just have to travel here and see for yourselves.

 1. Try a Freddo

I will start this one off with the best kind of coffee we have ever tasted. We are still jonzing for it every morning as we press our boring old cups to our lips pretending they are filled with this frothy treat. A gorgeous woman with bright green eyes that worked in our favorite little shop made this delicacy for us every single morning. We would walk down the street from our hotel, grab our freddos and march around the town, getting lost between the white buildings and eventually finding ourselves walking along the shore of the most brilliant body of water we have ever seen. We met even more amazing people out in front of this coffee shop including the man who owns it. He would always welcome us in and give us little pastries on the house while we waited. The day we left, a very sad day, he actually gave us both enormous hugs before sending us on our way with our very last Freddos. I’m still not sure what type of magic goes into the making of this coffee but if you take a trip to Mykonos you cannot leave without trying one.

2. Windmills of Mykonos

If you’ve read about Mykonos you have probably heard of the iconic windmills. You will notice many people wandering over to marvel at them and of course snapping photos of these gigantic works of art. They are located right next to the sea so it is impossible not to capture an incredible picture. The windmills can be seen from almost anywhere on the island but you have to go right up underneath the enormous fans to get the the full experience.

3. Ride a Quad

Riding a quad is an absolute must. The weather is as close to perfect as it gets and even though the town may be small, there are still other beaches that are too far to walk to and don’t even think about taking a cab unless you feel like throwing away a ton of cash. This is the cheapest and most effective way to get from beach to beach and see the island in all of its beauty. You also have the luxury of pulling over whenever you want to snap a couple pictures of the scenery or anything else you might run into along the way. (Including donkeys!)

 4. Jimmy’s Gyros

I am so grateful this place exists!! We have yet to find a gyro that compares to the ones they create at Jimmys. I am not even ashamed to admit we ate there every single day during our stay whether is was at midnight, morning or lunch time. The great thing about this place is the fact that it is open late so after you’ve had a couple to drink you can grab the most satisfying gyro you’ll ever get your hands on.

5. Mykonos Sunsets

The famous Mykonos sunsets… I wish I were sitting on the balcony of my hotel room watching one at this very moment. We live in Arizona so we do have the luxury of seeing some pretty lovely sunsets but none of them come close to ones we gazed upon in Mykonos. The colors are phenomenal and the feeling of warmth and comfort you get in the pit of your stomach is indescribable. It is incredible how something so simple can leave you completely mesmerized. The splashes of blue, yellow, orange permanently burned into your memory.

6. D’angelo Refresh Vitamin Bar

This the bar I mentioned in my introduction where we wandered in and met some of the most incredible people on the planet! They make cocktails with fresh fruits and fruit juices. They will even juice some of the fruit for you without alcohol if you’re trying to recover from the night before. This bar is smaller and a lot less crowded than the nightclubs in Mykonos so if your looking for a less hectic night you have to pay this place a visit. Actually, you have to go here reguardless because I guarantee you’ll have a great time. One of my favorite bars filled with some of the best people!!

7. Ornos Beach

Compared to Paradise beach and super paradise beach (which are known as the main party beaches on the Island) Ornos will most likely be less crowded during peak season. We hopped around to all three of them and found this one was the most relaxed. If you’re looking for a wild night paradise/super paradise beach is where it’s at. Regardless of which scene you prefer, the water on each of these beaches is warmed to the perfect temperature and is as clear as clear can be!

8. Get Lost in Town

Getting lost between the white walls of Mykonos is one of the most exhilarating experiences I had. It gives you time to let your worries wash away and take a deep breath of the fresh air while being comforted by the sound of children laughing and playing without fear. Lose yourself in this towns amazing charm and get familiar with the pleasant surroundings. It is my definition of heaven on earth.

9. Island Hop

Even though we enjoyed our stay on Mykonos Island more than words can say, we also knew we had to take advantage of the other Greek Islands being just a boat ride away. The most popular ones are Naxos, Paros and of course the legendary Santorini. We took a little day trip to Naxos and checked out yet another breathtaking, shimmering beach while sipping a couple mixed drinks. Naxos is the island closest to Mykonos with Santorini being the farthest. We recommend traveling to at least one during your trip, if possible!

We hope to be able to visit again soon!! Have fun and be safe during your stay and make sure you take pictures of everything because Mykonos is stunning in every aspect.
